I am a 2nd grade teacher from NJ. My colleague and I who teaches 1st grade have been doing a program together for the past two school years. However, in order to continue it next year we need funding assistance. Between the two classes, there are approximately 42-48 students expected. We teach in a middle class public school. The supplies for our project are not available to us.

Our project is called, "Lettuce Learn About Nutrition." The idea started as a play about healthy eating the first year, but we also decided to add a monthly recipe day. The children have a visitor from the community each month that comes in and explains why it is so important to eat healthy and exercise. He/she then demonstrates a healthy recipe along with a local area chef that comes every month. The recipe revolves around a selected fruit or vegetable that we call the "celebrity of the month." We have had some wonderful visitors that have been extremely motivating for the children such as a news anchor, college basketball coach and NJ Commissioner of Education and others. We really need assistance with the supplies as most of them have been bought by us teachers the past two years.

The resources we need are basic. We could use consumable chef hats to keep the children's heads covered when cooking for hygiene purposes. We also need the plastic ware and paper products that will last for ten months (one recipe day per month).

Adolescent obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the past several years. We are trying to empower the children at a young age (1st an 2nd grade) to make healthful food choices that will last a lifetime. We want to demonstrate monthly how quick and easy nutritious food can be prepared and how great it tastes. Please consider assisting us so that we can continue the adventure for the coming school year (2008-2009). Thanks for your consideration!
