Dear Friends, I am a third grade teacher in a high need school of New York City. Every year I pride myself in the fact that my students become wonderful writers. I teach all the basics and make sure they become independent writers. As they begin third grade I help them and I frequently model the writers process. One of the biggest obstacles is getting my students to correctly spell their words. I spend many lessons on spelling and I also explain to my students that the best spellers are not those that are able to memorize words, but rather those that use dictionaries. I have been teaching for 11 years. Last year I purchased 25 paperback dictionaries because I knew the need was great to be able to allow each student to learn using their own book. In the past my students have had to share 12 very old dictionaries. I was so happy that I now had a class set. During my first lesson using the new dictionaries I asked the children to search for the simple word swim. It was taking some time and I began to prompt the children in their search. One of my students declared that the word swim was not in the dictionary. I knew this could not be true. I continued to guide the students with their search. Then the horror, the disbelief, and the sadness. These dictionaries did not contain the word swim. I was disappointed and realized that was why these books were so very cheap. So once again we went back to our old, used and worn dictionaries. We shared and made it through another year. So once again after teaching for 12 years I still do not have a class set of dictionaries. I know a full class set of dictionaries would give my students the help they need when learning to become good writers, because only with a dictionary at your side can children freely become wonderful writers. Please make a difference in the writing ability of these children. I would greatly appreciate this wonderful gift.
