New York, NY Grades 6-8

I teach at a middle school (6th through 8th grade) in New York City. Most of our students have come from the Dominican Republic, are English language learners, and eighty percent qualify for free lunch. Furthermore, many of the students come from broken homes, as many parents live in another country or work multiple jobs to support their new lives in the United States. Yet, even with the odds stacked against them, our students are energetic, enthusiastic, insightful, and intelligent young teenagers.

I feel strongly that a specific group of next year’s 8th grade students deserve to visit Washington, DC, and experience the heart of this country for themselves. This group has proven themselves as top academic performing 7th grade students who are passionate about learning about their new country’s history and civic system. They pursued, participated, and worked hard throughout the Thurgood Marshall Junior Mock Trial program, dedicating hours during lunch and after school 3 days a week to study this nation’s legal system. Their hard work manifested in a competition against 50 other public and private schools in New York City, of which they made it to the 2nd round!

Through this 3-day Gerber Tours trip they will be able to visit the highlights of this country’s capital: national monuments, renowned museums, and government landmarks, all which I am positive will yield a strong sense of patriotism in this group of future leaders.

However, due to limited funding, the only way to make this trip possible is through fund raising and the generosity of donors like you! Every donation, however big or small, will bring us closer to providing these top students with an amazing learning opportunity that they truly deserve. Thank you in advance for your support.
