Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My students are full of heart and hope. Most are ethnically diverse, inner-city students who travel long and far to get a quality education. My student, Nancy, and I want to inspire a passion to reach their dreams and goals through examining how to overcome challenges and cultivate self-acceptance.

We want to do the best we can and inspire students with content that both makes them want to read and also empowers them with tools of how to heal their own traumas so they can thrive. For an independent book project, Nancy read the non-fiction book "Quiet" and felt as though it changed how she saw the world and herself. We thought it would be powerful if all our students had the chance to read this book, along with "Daring Greatly". We thought it would be a great idea too if students kept a journal and sketchbook where they would track their progress and identity shifts through the unit. We want them to see how what they read is connected to their lives and how through learning about the world around them they can build resources that will help them deal with the struggles and traumas they face in their own lives.

We are requesting copies of "Daring Greatly", "Quiet", and other classroom library titles to help students build tools and resources to deal with the traumas they face in life and value their own experiences and unique personalities. We plan to teach them in a unit on Identity where students will learn about ways that people heal wounds so they can thrive. As we read the books, students will learn strategies of healing so that this becomes their frame of reference. We want them to see success as the norm, not the exception, so that they can truly envision themselves as worthy and capable of reaching their dreams and goals. We want them to see themselves as survivors of the challenges they harbor, not victims, and to have confidence in their tools to be able to thrive. We want students to be able to leverage their own unique characteristics to thrive in and out of the classroom. As we build literacy skills for college and career, students will also explore and honor their own identities.

In Their Own Words

By having access to these two amazing books and sketch journals, my peers and I would be able to reach our goal of expanding our knowledge. We would be able to learn from these books the different ways we view the world. The books "Daring Greatly", and "Quiet" are both books that help individuals identify with themselves. As a student who is a big reader, I would love the opportunity to read any book and have access to sketch journals so my peers and I can learn to become better people.

By having the opportunity to use these classroom materials, I would be very grateful, and I would take advantage of it. I believe that books are vital in growing. I have learned so much in the past from books. "Daring Greatly" and "Quiet" would allow me to learn even more. As a student who has read "Quiet", I can say that I would love that my classmates read it too. It helped me see a bigger picture in the world. This opportunity would be a great way for us to learn more.

Many times, the books students are made to read are very outdated. This project will solve this problem by giving students the opportunity to read more modern books in our classroom. The books "Daring Greatly" and "Quiet" are known for their value and their way of making one reflect on life. As a student, I believe one can learn a lot from books like this. It is a way to see the world in a different way and consider our life experiences.
