SnackTime Reading Buddies

My students need a variety of books (from Beep, Beep to Afternoon at that Amazon) to read during buddy reading, as well as paper to copy printable books.

Ms. W.
Grades 3-5

I teach at a high need, at risk school, in the special education department of a public school. I teach all subject areas to my third to fifth grade students who are all classified IDMI (recently changed from EMD).

My student are very helpful and desire to help others learn on a daily basis. The problem is that they simply lack the 'know' to help in the manner that their peers are able to help. The pre-kindergarten class at our school are learning their alphabet and beginning sounds, as are some of my students, with others having mastered this skill but still needing help with repetition. The students have enjoyed reading with their "buddy" and have taken great pride in learning all the words in their story to help another student read the same story.

Therefore, we are going to continue inviting them to become our reading buddies. To do this, the students will each need a variety of reading materials at different levels. I would like to have enough sets/pairs of books to allow each student to self select their own reading selection for "buddy reading".

By providing funding for this grant, you are building a group of students self-esteem as well as reading ability. You will be providing some essential concepts to help students who might other wise not have an opportunity to excel, become the helper verses being helped.
