I teach the Senior Hospitality class within the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism at a low-income, urban public school.

My students are very interested in learning about hospitality and tourism, specifically hotels and restaurants. We have sustained silent reading every day and our students often bring in books they are not interested in, or choose not to read. Reading something that interests the students increases their vocabulary and knowledge about the subject. In addition, many studies also say reading increases all types of performance on standardized tests.

I have brought in my own magazines to the classroom, such as AAA Travel and SF Magazine, and students are enthralled with reading these magazines! They enjoy reading these because they are interested in the subject and magazines are 'fun' to read. They can't wait to talk to other students or me about what they read. My students have limited access to the hotels and restaurants beyond field trips and eating in restaurants. The requested magazines will give the students the opportunity to learn about the trends and popular knowledge in the industry.

Your financial support will help my students have access to knowledge they can not get anywhere else! The students are excited because they get to read fun and interesting magazines and I am happy because they are accessing knowledge and learning.
