As a first grade teacher in a highly diversified elementary school in California, I do my very best to instill in my first grade students the importance of reading. Many years ago I created a reading corner in my classroom with a small multicultural library to meet the needs of my first grade students. My reading corner consists of a few bookshelves, baskets of books, some large stuffed animals, and two very worn bean bag chairs.

With No Child Left Behind and the state mandated scripted curriculum, first graders are required to sit and participate in a reading program that often takes the joy out of reading. My project is to provide a comfortable reading space in my classroom for my students to enjoy reading. By replacing the old worn out 20 year old bean bag chairs with new and comfortable bean bag chairs, the students' reading corner will again be a comfortable and safe environment for my first grade students to read with a friend.

I am asking for four child size bean bag chairs to replace the existing worn out bean bag chairs for my reading corner. First graders love to read with a friend, sharing their favorite books, and helping each other learn to read. These bean bag chairs will provide the needed seating space for my students to share favorite books with a friend and will help develop their love for reading.
