A Closer Look at the Civil Rights Movement

My students need at their disposal a wide-range of quality children's literature related to the Civil Rights Movement.

This project expired on November 30, 2008.

I am a fourth grade teacher in a rural town. I was hired in an attempt to reduce classroom size in a district where drop-out rates soar.

In an attempt to motivate and engage these students, I have planned a lengthy unit on the Civil Rights Movement. Many students know the basics: Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks. I want, however, for my students to dig even deeper. Through the use of book clubs, inquiry projects, and a presentation to members of our community, my goal is for the students to learn to appreciate the opportunity they've been given.

To make this happen, the students need a wide-range of children's literature at their fingertips to read and explore. The school library simply cannot provide the large volumes of literature that these children need in our classroom during this unit.

With your help, I can make this possible. My students will have the chance to not only learn and explore the issues surrounding the Civil Rights Movement, but share what they've learned with our community. Please help me in my efforts to engage my students and help them appreciate the education that they have been afforded.
