I am a first grade teacher in NC. I love my job and enjoy helping my students be the best learners they can be!

During my 14 years of teaching, I have learned first graders do not understand how big the world is around them! They truthfully do not understand there is a difference between a city or state much less a country. I want to change this for my students and I think I have a neat way. I want them to learn the world is large and there are many places to learn about and visit. While we won't be going on any field trips, they will be able to learn about different states and students that live in the USA.

A Travel Buddy is a soft toy that travels as a representative of our class. Our buddy will be a honeybee because it is North Carolina's state insect. The buddy will be mailed and visit different schools and states; like a cultural exchange between classes. The travel buddy becomes a guest of the host location and participates in activities with the children. In addition to the stuffed honeybee, a scrapbook will be sent with the buddy so the new students will learn about where my students live, what we look like and about our state, NC. A travel log will also be included so each classroom can include pictures and writings of things they did while the buddy visited them. At the end of the exchange the buddy is mailed back to the original classroom. I can hardly wait to see when my students get to help open the box that holds our visitors.....they will be so excited!

If you would like to help my students get excited while learning geography skills and provide a hands-on way to learn about cultural awareness, then this project is it! I love helping my students learn geography skills and about their world.
