I want to teach my 11th grade American literature students Zora Neale Hurston's, "Their Eyes Were Watching God." This novel is about a young African American woman's journey that leads to self-discovery.

I work in an inner-city school in California. All of my students come from linguistically and ethnically diverse backgrounds. I strive to bridge the gap between the literature that is avaiable to me and the literature that I know my students can better identify with. Not only is this book written by a female, the protagonist is also a female, a characteristic not often found in the American literary canon.

I need this book to inspire my students to consider an American perspective outside of the traditional "dead White male" lens. I would use this book to ignite student-centered discussions and projects, and compare it to other themes of the time (Harlem Renaissance, The AA "Minstrel", and African American folklore/dialect). We would also look at the reception of the novel, both 'good' and 'bad'.

Your donation will not guarantee that all of my students will love this novel. However, it will guarantee that my students can have a greater understanding of the universality of human experience, so aptly portrayed in Hurston's novel.
