Be a Geologist!

My students need a classroom rock, fossil and mineral collection.

Mrs. H. Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School
Port Washington, NY Grades 6-8

My beginner level ESL middle school students learn English through the content areas. My students especially learn best when provided with hands-on and real life learning experiences.

One of the units of the beginner ESL science class is rocks and minerals. As part of the unit, students take walks around the school and their own neighborhood to collect rock samples. However, a rock collection would increase the learning benefits of examining rock samples in numerous ways. A rock collection of seventy-five specimens will provide students with real life opportunities to examine and sort all of the rocks they will be required to study as geologists would. Without this rock collection, students will be limited to physically examining the rock samples that they collect on their own; any remaining rocks they do not collect will be presented to the students through textbook photographs restricting their opportunities to interact with the specimens.

With this rock collection, the students will be able to study and sort the rocks using visual/kinesthetic intelligences and all five senses resulting in a more comprehensive learning experience for the students. Such experiences will elicit more varied language from our beginner level ESL students. For instance, using the five senses to examine the rock specimens will allow students to better connect and categorize the unique characteristics of the rocks to the associated vocabulary, such as “igneous,” “metamorphic,” and “sedimentary.”

Overall, a rock collection will bring the unit to life. By being able to physically feel, smell, and see the rock specimens, the chances of the students being able to recognize those rocks in the real world increases substantially. With this rock collection, students will be able to make greater connections and associations to the unit resulting in a memorable, engaging and meaningful learning experience. The ESL program at our school does not have a large budget for additional curricular materials, thus we are reaching out for your assistance to help us get this rock collection. We are extremely appreciative of your support.
