Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach English and advise the school yearbook in an inner city neighborhood where the kids dodge gangs and drug dealers and domestic violence just to get to school every day. They are terrific kids who have overcome enormous odds to continue their education.
Our school's yearbook program did not exist until a year ago. The school gave me a class of students who were interested in putting together our school's first book.
I had one computer and two cameras - one of which was a cheap little thing that can only take posed shots outside, and one was stolen two weeks later by a student who broke into the classroom. Since then we've begged two more of those cheap little cameras from our yearbook publisher, but we still can't take pictures of sports or anything that happens inside the auditorium. The kids want to be able to take pictures when they see them framed in the best way possible for the moment, not wait for everyone to pose in perfect light.
I need cameras, a printer, computers and the materials to make them run, but for now I'll settle on a camera that can handle sports. I can teach them about the rule of thirds or depth of field. Right now, all I can teach them is how to hold the camera still so the picture won't come out blurry. I would like to see them take award-winning photographs.
For some students, a class like yearbook is what keeps them coming to school every day. They love being able to capture life here and put it on the page where students will see it ten, twenty, thirty years later. With your gift, my students could finally go from catching a blurry image to capturing a beautiful, storytelling moment. All it takes is one camera.
