Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In the beginning of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby is seen in the distance reaching for the green light -- a symbol of his hopes and dreams. My students, 11th graders who come to New York from countries as far away as Mali, have always resonated with Gatsby's dream. They too are in search of the so-called American Dream. But for them, reaching it is not as easy as it is for Jay Gatsby. My students are often one to two grades below level when starting high school and many live well below the poverty level.

The Great Gatsby is one of the required texts read in 11th grade English. A challenging text, it is one most students later say is their favorite. To take advantage of this, I would like my students to read a more contemporary version of Gatsby and compare the two texts.

The ideal companion to Fitzgerald's classic is the novel Bodega Dreams, which is set in Spanish Harlem (where a great many of my students live). By reading the contemporary novel, students will be making connections, while comparing and contrasting the two pieces. This task is a major component to the New York State English Regents Exam, which all 11th graders. The modern update to Gatsby will also provide an outlet for those students who are frustrated by the complexities of the original novel.

With your help, my students will become better at analyzing and comparing works of literature. Your donation will help shape minds and build futures of my eager students.
