Grades 3-5

I currently teach 4th/5th grade math in a predominately African-American elementary school in Illinois. The poverty rate in this low socioeconomic community is at 95%. Math is a crucial component in student’s academic and social success. It is extremely important that students are continuously challenged to think critically about math, especially in real life, real world situations. Using magazines is another way to spark students’ interest math and to build reading, oral and written language skills and add new avenues for thinking critical about the world around them, which can benefit both regular education and special education students.

Our school no longer subscribes to classroom magazines like Time for Kids and Weekly Reader Current Health 1 magazines due to deep budget cuts. Students constantly ask for the Time for Kids and Weekly Reader Current Health 1 magazines to read and are disappointed when I remind them that we no longer receive them. Time for Kids and Weekly Reader Current Health 1 magazines will support teaching math goals, build and strengthen math and reading skills through current events and current health topics. Information in these magazines provides students with a fresh approach to math by using real world examples.

By using the current news and health topic articles in Time for Kids and Weekly Reader Current Health 1 magazines, math will become relevant to students in ways that allow them to practice consumer math skills, map and graph reading, diagrams, measurements, math puzzles and brainteasers to challenge young minds. These magazines have articles that can help reinforce math skills, improve test scores, introduce them to current events and health topics and simplify complex concepts by breaking them into smaller chunks of information, making the information more accessible and more interesting to the students.

This summary describes how Time for Kids and Weekly Reader Current Health 1 magazines, which are geared for the elementary classroom, will benefit my students: •Provide engaging current news and health topics that can be used to teach math in an engaging way; •Content of both magazines includes: current news, nutrition, fitness, personal health, and the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol, along with today's essential health news •Correlates with science, health, math and social studies standards. •Provides age appropriate articles; •Provides a valuable link between home and school.
