Getting to Know California's Native Americans

I teach a curious group of active 4th graders with varying interest and achievement levels. As part of the 4th grade curriculum, we study the role of Native Americans in California's history.

Unfortunately, our only materials for introducing the students to Native American cultures is a textbook with a small general chapter about a few tribes. Kids don't get a chance to see the cultural features and ways of life of specific tribes who used to live all around them.

I have discovered a set of 12 hardback books dedicated to specific tribes of California. With these books I would divide my class into groups and assign them a project with two parts. The first part involves creating a diorama of the tribe's housing, dress and food source. In the second part, they will each create a picture book which compares their lifestyle today, with that of a child in their focus tribe. On one side they will draw a picture of how they dress themselves with a few describing sentences. Then on the facing side they will draw a Native American child as he or she would dress.

I know that with your help, my kids could have the opportunity to make a personal connection to a tribe's cultural history through these books and projects. They will create meaningful learning that will not be forgotten after the test.
