Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

What better way to create a knowledge base than through Group Collaboration! Teaching Earth Science to 9th grade students can be a difficult task. Our high school has a high population of low socio-economic students that are on reduced or free lunches, and consists of a diverse population. My classroom has many English Language Learners as well, and attempting to grab their attention and facilitate the curriculum in understanding concepts for science can be difficult.

As California’s student spending is decreasing (currently 46th in the Nation), getting additional supplies to help support student learning is easier said than done. And let’s face it; Earth Science as a whole is not a subject every kid loves. While the kids always ask, “Do we get to blow anything up?” or “Can we make an exploding Volcano”, the latter is more of a middle school project and the “blowing things up” is not an option. But, by capturing their attention, and creating a diverse selection of group collaboration lessons for the students, it will allow the students to establish a conceptual understanding of the curriculum. It has been shown that when students are actively engaged in each other’s ideas and reasoning, they try to reach mutual understanding and can build upon each other’s contributions, and its significance can be co-constructed. The students then learn to share the responsibility by participation and can feel ownership to their learning. This type of learning then begins the process of the student “thinking outside of the box” in their academic understanding of the material.

To help the students “step outside the box” I am in need of 6 Magnetic Dry Erase Boards. These boards will allow me to use different lessons to reach my students and help to facilitate the curriculum in group collaboration settings, which differs from the traditional “Question-Response-Evaluation” process. Group collaboration can assist in the construction of meaningful relations and the comparison of different conceptions. It can help promote the awareness of any gaps in their understanding of the material and in correcting any misconceptions they may have in reference to science data. By allowing the students to interact with each other, it allows for another type of modality in reaching the students. Options that can be used with the magnetic dry erase boards include brainstorming activities, ability to observe thinking skills, help to facilitate team work, concept development, creation in design skills, concept mapping, and help in developing organizational skills, to name a few.

By utilizing group collaboration and the magnetic dry erase boards, it will allow the students to see a more complete “image” of the material. Not all students learn in the same manner, and each student brings to the classroom their own learning style and need. By being able to implement these magnetic dry erase boards, you will make a difference and allow me to broaden my teaching methods and reach more students.
