Ms. C.
Grades 6-8

My 6-8th grade Science students live in a high-need community. We have suffered recent budget cuts and we are not able to order supplies that are not considered to be necessities.

The problem: We currently have 3 LCD projectors (from a grant) to share among 9 classes of about 180 students. I cannot use a projector on a daily basis since so many teachers need it. Two uses for a projector: 1. Next year we will be receiving brand new textbooks for grades 6-8 that include amazing technology! The teacher edition comes with a CD containing pre-made power point presentations that can be edited to fit the classroom's individual needs. The textbook can also be projected onto the screen as well as short movies and lab demonstrations. Being able to present students with information digitally gives me the opportunity to differentiate my instruction for visual and auditory learners. 2. Our 8th grade students have to complete an "Exit-Project" for Science in order to be promoted to 9th grade. Part of completing that project requires them to make and present a power point presentation. After watching the majority of my students awkwardly present their projects this year, my goal is to give each student the opportunity to learn how to present confidently.

My students are currently struggling to read my bad handwriting on chart paper that is contributing to the demise of our environment. They also have to look at my horrible drawings of diagrams on the chalkboard. A LCD projector would allow me to effectively use the resources that are coming with our new textbooks. Auditory and visual learners will be able to benefit from short animations, films, and vivid power point presentations on a daily basis. Learning would be much more interesting projected on a screen and no longer will my students have to decipher my handwriting. All students will be able to practice preparing AND presenting short power point presentations so that they can confidently move on to 9th grade when the time comes. Communication is one of the most important tools I can pass on to my students and by giving them multiple opportunities to practice public speaking, I am empowering them to succeed.

Your help will ensure that all of my students will benefit from colorful and animated lessons that will make learning fun, interactive, and more interesting. You will also make it possible for my 8th grade, and future 8th grade, "presentionally challenged" students to practice a skill that is vital for their academic success. As a new teacher, I am constantly reaching into my own pockets to buy things that my students need. Unfortunately, my pockets just aren't deep enough to handle this kind of expense. Any amount that you can contribute will make a huge difference in the education of my students. Thank you in advance for your generosity and kind spirit.
