I teach 7th grade in a low-income school in inner-city Brooklyn. My school is unique, in that it is one of the only schools in the city to be a full-inclusion middle school. This means that in every classroom, general education and special education students are educated together. Students with learning disabilities, speech and language delays, and behavior disorders come together with general education students to learn in a "normal" classroom setting. My students are primarily from low-income families. Consequently, they have limited access to technology as commonplace as computers. In my English/Language Arts classroom, I use as much technology as I can, but as the entire class shares four desktop computers, it is difficult to organize and manage all of the writing pieces they are producing. With a class set of USB Flash drives, each student would be given the opportunity to create and maintain his or her own portfolio of saved work. Not only does this give them ownership and pride in their writing, but it also incorporates more technological education into the classroom. Research has shown that technology increases student motivation, test scores, and investment in school work. Additionally, this donation would help us address one of the New York State Writing standards, as well as help my special education students with their organizational skills. Please help my students make the gains I know they can make by funding these USB Flash Drives. You will make a difference in the lives of so many kids who will be eternally grateful.
