Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A good news reporter is a good critical thinker! I'm a 4th grade teacher working at a high-need school. I'm working on a school newspaper to serve as an enrichment program for literacy and the arts.
My kids are incredibly excited about making a newspaper for everyone in the school to read. A newspaper will provide an opportunity for students to build reading and writing skills as well as the ability to question the world around them. My school's budget was just cut by $200,000 so we do not have the resources to start a new program on our own.
A digital camera will provide a hook for students interested in photography and see the school through a new "lens". The notebooks are essential for my young reporters to do their jobs. A newspaper will provide an incredible chance for cross-curricular integration - arts, math, writing, reading and more! Above all, teaching my kids journalistic skills teaches them life long skills like research, fact-finding, interviewing and critical thinking.
Students across the school are excited to be a part of the brand new school newspaper. But for now the newspaper is a little more than idea. We need supplies to make this idea a reality. Thank you for your help!
