The Human Story: Can't Read at Age 16

My students need 15 copies of the book, "Human Story", by James C. Davis.

Mrs. Wagoner Harwood Career Preparatory High School
Evansville, IN Grades 9-12

My teenage students are still learning how to read. Specifically, my students focus on learning to read non-fiction in a World History class. For one of our projects over the semester, we transform the classroom into a gigantic timeline with color-coded continent note cards identifying the importance of turning points, and illustrated with biography and vocabulary posters. This involves daily reading, evaluating, and judging of what information is crucial to understanding how and why events unfolded as they did.

Most students at our alternative high school test between a third and sixth grade reading level when they come to us (data from Gates-McGintie). Our average student has been suspended or expelled from regular high school for classroom behaviors that disrupt the education of other students. They attend our school for 1-2 semesters for behavior modification before returning. Our situation begs the question -- are they failing to read because of the behavior or are they behaving badly because they cannot read and thus engage in class?

Many of our students have ADD or ADHD. That in itself is not a reading disorder nor does it have to be a barrier to reading. If the students have materials appropriate to their needs, they can quickly advance and witness their own progress. After 2 1/2 years of watching certain students struggle with focusing on our graphics-intensive textbook, I experimented with a chapter of text-only from an engaging and conversational book, "Human Story", by history professor James C. Davis. This books covers the same academic standards as our textbook. Students were shown how to mark a text and then used that "allowance" of words to write with. Our graphics-intensive textbook requires simultaneous left- and right-brain involvement -- a very beneficial approach for most readers. For the ADD and ADHD students, it could be a source of distraction. During this project, students were able to settle down more quickly to reading and stay reading longer. More students did the homework. Students asked questions for more information! Some students were transformed.

You can help me transform struggling young adults into readers, because reading is basic to their success at all levels. If you help fund this proposal, you will help these students experience academic progress--some for the first time in their lives. You will help give them methods to survive and behave when they return to their regular high school. This is their first step in graduating high school and having the option of continuing education. Thank you for considering my proposal.
