Help a New Teacher Build a Better Classroom Library!

My students need good literature to read!

Tualatin, OR Grades PreK-2

I teach a group of First Grade students that is a mixture of English speakers, Spanish speakers, and students with special needs. The school that I work at has a high population of students who are eligible for free/reduced lunch. Many of my students do not have books at home to enjoy therefore I want to create a classroom environment where books are plentiful and reading is cherished. My students have worked so hard to learn to read this year and they continue to improve their skills. I want to make sure that the books in my classroom are age appropriate and relate to their interests so they continue to be excited about reading.

Several of my students participate in a Spanish Language Arts class and are learning to read in Spanish. Unfortunately, I currently do not have many books in Spanish at all. During silent reading time these students have to choose from the same small selection every time. Often they choose stories in English because they have already read all the ones in Spanish, but they are not able to read these books and do not truly comprehend the story/information in an English text.

Increasing the number of books that my students have access to as well as providing more age appropriate books and examples of good literature will help my students continue with their excitement for reading. The same old books can get boring, so I want to make sure their interest is sparked. My school library is encouraging kids to read non-fiction books and I have very few in the classroom. When we learn about weather, amphibians, symbols of our country, and states of matter, I want the students to be able to learn more through independent reading.

Your support will ensure that my students stay excited about reading and find fascination within the pages of books. Books found at tag sales can be inexpensive, but are not always informative and interesting. My students deserve the chance to read books that will enrich their minds and encourage them to read more! Books that have been specifically selected to match the curriculum goals for First Graders will help them better understand Science and Social Studies concepts.
