160 motivated K-3 students learning, playing, and loving Spanish want to connect more with familiar children's classics in Spanish!
My kindergarten, first, second, and third grade students have a unique opportunity at our school to learn Spanish from the first day of kindergarten. This opportunity to learn another language from such an early age helps them broaden their world view, learn about other cultures, be more than prepared for high school foreign language classes, and identify and express themselves in a language usually different from their home language. Our foreign language program gives every student 30 minutes of Spanish language instruction every day (rarely seen in public schools!) yet without a set curriculum. As their teacher, I have found their attachment and identification with familiar children's literature, especially Dr. Seuss and Eric Carle books, essential in their continued motivation in the difficult task of learning a new language. I personally own one Dr. Seuss and 3 Eric Carle books in Spanish, and would love to give my students more fun, rhyming, familiar literature to base lessons around and read in free time.
My students' connection and identification with Spanish at this young age is essential!! They'll learn colors, numbers, about the environment and accepting other people, essential and silly Spanish vocabulary, and lots of laughs (in Spanish!)
