I have the wonderful pleasure every day to teach 83 fifth graders about history at a rural middle school in South Carolina.

In today's world, technology is a vital tool for life. Our students are going to step into a world that requires them to live and work in a tech-savvy environment where print in books is not the emphasis, but electronic text is the standard. Students will be responsible for communicating through blogs, podcasts, and online forums. Many educational researchers say that technology is crucial for our classrooms and will be a must if we want to truly reach our students. My students are digital natives and have shown interests time and time again in using technology. Technology can be a very important tool in the classroom when connected to learning and student interests. Many of my students talk about older siblings that have mp3 players and about how "cool" they are to use. So, why not incorporate them into the classroom to make learning authentic?

For this proposal, I need five mp3 players that allow students to listen to podcasts and record their own podcasts. A podcast is an audio file that can be downloaded from the Internet. Many educational podcasts are age appropriate and written in such a way that they captivate listeners. There are lots of historically correct podcasts on web sites such as iTunes. These podcasts teach students history in a way that they are interested in learning - through technology. The second part of this project is for students to create their own podcasts on various history topics. Then, students would share their podcasts with each other, which then makes them teachers of the content. It is has been proved that when students have to complete research on a topic and present it to their peers, they have a very deep understanding of the content.

By funding this proposal, you will empower my students with technology. One of my personal goals as a teacher is to make school "cool" so that students are engaged in learning. Middle schoolers are sometimes a hard audience to engage in learning for a vast number of reasons. Middle schoolers are changing physically, mentally, and even socially which makes life sometimes confusing and difficult to understand. To help captivate my students, what better way then by putting mp3 players in their hands so that they can explore history in a 21st century way.
