Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It's difficult to tell your family what you did at school when you don't have the language to express yourself. I teach in a small urban school that has a high special education population. 85% of all the students receive free lunch. I currently teach a class of eight students that have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. They are between the ages of 5-8 years old.
One of the biggest challenges that we face at our school is creating continuity between home and school. Autism is a language based disability. My students can not go home and tell about their day at school. This can be frustrating for them and for their caregivers. I try to write an individual note to each family every day but I can not always convey some of the wonderful things that have transpired.
I believe that if I had a digital camera and a printer I could capture some of the wonderful things that are happening in school. Photographs would encourage communication between the students and their families. If my students could show their families a picture of the amazing block city that they built or the ABC puzzle they completed then their families would have a concrete springboard for conversation. Caregivers can ask questions or just make comments about the picture. Students would have something tangible to help them remember what they did at school.
I believe that by sending home photos parents will feel more connected to their children because there is a form of communication being shared. You will make it possible to strengthen the home school connection, increase language skills, and help students feel proud about their accomplishments.
