Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Listening impacts students across the curriculum. My general music classroom consists of middle school students from sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. We are a diverse school. Our school has about 39% economically disadvantage students. We are a school excited about the arts and learning.

My music students have music class every day for twelve weeks. We learn about music from all different places like West Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, and the United States. Listening to music from these places helps our students think about musical elements and feel alive with the experience of music from different backgrounds. Research has also shown that listening to music has benefits in other subject areas such as language arts. Students can foster even deeper critical listening skills by exploring music in small group activities aided by a listening center. However, my classroom budget will not be able to provide listening centers.

We need three listening centers each equipped with six personal headphones. Students will benefit from this project by collaborating with each other in a small group. They will be able to develop listening maps from the music they hear and present them to the class. The students will develop better listening skills that they can use in different subject areas.

Your help in providing listening centers for my music classroom will ensure that my students can continue to explore music from different places and backgrounds, help them work together as a group, and develop their listening for all areas of life.
