Every child should graduate from high school with the ability to read. At my public charter school in DC, I am a high school reading teacher in need.

For four years, I have worked diligently to improve the literacy program at my school. For years I have taught students who are sixteen and illiterate and struggling to pass their classes. I have witnessed how schools are struggling desperately to educate the students with little or no funds, books, or supplies. This is a travesty when we live in one of the richest countries in the world, but cannot guarantee that every child graduates from high school knowing how to read. I need help. The children in my classes are provided with some resources, but not much. This year, I could not have centers in my classroom, because I had to have remedial reading classes of 18-25 students, when traditionally the classes should only range from 10-12 students. In most DC public schools, in particular mine, we lack technology and basic space for the children to receive the necessary remediation needed in order to reach grade level.

In order for these remedial and illiterate students to rise and improve, they need supplemental materials in the form of lap tops, head phones, and a printer. They need these things in order to work on phonics and phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary drills, and reading comprehension. In addition, a laptop is versatile because it allows the students to listen to educational software and audio books, interact with academic software, and work on writing skills. The head phones allow for privacy and multiple things to transpire in the room, while a printer will allow the children to print study materials and print papers.

By supporting literacy in the classroom, your help will ensure that my students, your future leaders will be able to read and write on grade level and move closer to performing at a proficient or advanced level on standardized tests. By giving, you will make it possible for these beautiful and smart children to overcome long-term and damaging obstacles.
