Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My students are full of heart and hope. I want to inspire them to find their voices and dream big through access to the arts. I want them to view our curriculum as connected to their lives and for them to see their capacity to fully live the lives they've imagined.

My students love being active learners, and so we discussed ways to extend learning outside the classroom and increase their access to arts education. Earlier this school year, they put a photography exhibition on identity, and we wanted to build on the momentum to extend real-world learning through the use of spoken word poetry in our classroom.

Along with their English skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, students will develop active learning skills of exploring arts education through poetry. This project will truly be about empowering students through art to examine how they see the world and their place in it. I plan to bring the program Say Word into my classroom. Say Word empowers young people to express themselves and improve literacy through spoken word inside the classroom and out. Say Word's goal is to provide students with tools to document the history of their own lives while providing a safe space that encourages young writers to grow.

In Their Own Words

We would like to bring our classroom to life through using art and technology. We need Say Word LA to come to our classroom to lead spoken word sessions. We want our classmates to learn through hands-on activities that Say Word will bring. This way, learning can be fun, meaningful and can help us find our voices.

We want to make a "chapbook" with Say Word, where we will type our poems and put them into a class book. We will also have a class poetry slam where students will perform their poems and also invite in an outside audience to hear them. We will use technology to type our poems and film the poetry slam. This way, we will build our speaking skills, art skills and technology skills in a fun way.

We want to make learning fun and bring arts education and poetry into our classroom. We want learning to come alive for our classmates and peers and for them all to use poetry and technology to increase learning while having fun.
