Mr. Johnson from Saint Louis MO is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need basketballs, dodge balls, softballs, bases, bats, footballs, bean bags, cones, jump ropes, volleyballs, flags, charts & diagrams.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My goal is to help my students develop a working knowledge of various games and sports as well as healthy dietary and fitness habits that will follow them beyond their middle school years. My biggest challenge is a lack of supplies and equipment to motivate and engage students in creative ways.
My school is located in midtown St.
Louis City and serves approximately 170 students in 5th through 8th grade. All of these students receive free or reduced priced lunch, and most of them come to school without the basic school supplies they need for their core classes, much less the appropriate clothes or shoes to wear for PE. The homes these students come from are located in impoverished and dangerous neighborhoods where it is often too dangerous for students to play outside. My students are a unique group of children who come in all shapes and sizes. Some excel at academics and sports, or at least one or the other, while some have special learning needs and require more individualized attention.
Currently, my students lack even the most basic PE necessities, such as balls and cones. I am requesting supplies and equipment including dodge balls, kick balls, softballs, bases, bats, basketballs, footballs, bean bags, cones, jump ropes, volleyballs and flags. These items will upgrade our PE program to one that is fully functional, offers students diverse learning experiences and combats students’ current levels of inactivity and poor eating habits. Students will be able to play games like capture the flag, doctor dodge ball, mat ball, baseball, and soccer just to name a few. We also requested healthy eating charts, muscle diagrams, and physical education board games that will broaden students’ knowledge of long-term health.
Donations to this project will make our P.E.
program fully functional and allow us to create an active learning environment that promotes long-term health and an active lifestyle. This will help create the fun and safe environment that my students are missing at home all while learning important skills and information.
