My school is located in midtown St. Louis City and serves approximately 170 students in 5th through 8th grade. All of these students receive free or reduced priced lunch, and most of them come to school without the basic school supplies they need for their core classes, much less the appropriate clothes or shoes to wear for PE. The homes these students come from are located in impoverished and dangerous neighborhoods where it is often too dangerous for students to play outside. My students are a unique group of children who come in all shapes and sizes. Some excel at academics and sports, or at least one or the other, while some have special learning needs and require more individualized attention.
