Drumming Our Way to Success

My students need djembe drums, tambourines, maracas and a shekeres in order to improve their reading fluency through rhythm, repetition and movement.

Research has proven that rhythm practice improves reading fluency. I teach fourth grade in a low income, rural school district. Over 50% of my students receive free and reduced lunch.

My students face poverty, abuse and single parent homes. The community offers few opportunities for diverse experiences. The poverty and single parent homes provide obstacles for many parents to be able to provide the support students need at home in order to be successful readers.

Reading specialists have linked rhythm and musical activities to increased reading fluency. In order to provide this opportunity for my students I will need djembe drums, tambourines, maracas and shekeres. These instruments will provide vital experiences needed to increase reading skills. Students will begin the study of rhythm by learning the basic sounds their instruments can make. Then, the students will learn basic quarter note beats and move up the note values from there. Eventually, students will have the basic understanding of rhythms and then they will increase the tempo. This is where I intend to see huge growth in their reading fluency. The ability to use the learned rhythms at different tempos will transform their skills in more than one area. It is the same process for reading. They will simply use their reading skills at an increased tempo, thus increased fluency. During Reading practice students will be charting their reading fluency on leveled passages. During drumming practice they will keep track of the tempos. At the end of the unit they will compare graphs and see a direct correlation and huge growth.

By donating these instruments to my classroom, you will give students an opportunity to be exposed to rhythm and music. This exposure will lead them to success in reading and a passion for something meaningful. Honing their ability to learn a skill and be able to increase their speed at that skill will be valuable throughout their lives.
