I teach kindergarten (usually) and this year had the pleasure of looping (moving up)with my kindergarten students to first grade. We are a room filled with many wonderful students. Seventy percent of my students are English Language Learners, and I also serve a few students with special needs.

This year we have struggled to build fluency in our reading. One way that kids are able to do that (especially ELL students) is by hearing stories read, interacting with text, and rereading several of their favorite stories. Our listening center is a very involved and often malfunctioning area. The CD's and tapes often don't play well. It is hard to get students to independently use the listening area when the technology is constantly malfunctioning.

The Leappad systems are extremely easy for kids to use (especially kindergarteners). With these Leappads, the students will be able to listen to a variety of stories, interact with them, as well as practice reading on their own. I have been searching for the best way to get students to hear text being read with expression and fluency, especially when I can't be available at all times to read to them. This will be a fantastic resource for my students, and a tool few of them have ever had access to.

Your help will make it possible for my students to get the critical listening component of literacy. It will ensure daily practice with print and fluency, and let kids have fun at the same time!!
