Take advantage of the students' great interest in digital media and use it to bridge the divide between their desire to read and the visual delight that digital media offers. I am an English teacher to 10th graders and nowhere is the lack of the desire to read more felt than in the English classroom. Students refuse to read not just because they do not find pleasure in reading but also, the majority do not believe that reading about the experiences of characters would be of any use to them in real life. But they will give up their time to stay glued to a screen watching music videos or watching clips from YouTube. The lure of digital media is tempting indeed ... and the challenge for the teacher to get our students to read a book is great. What if we use this interest to get them to read and create meaningful videos they can share with others. Students will use the digital cameras to create video clips that will tap their creative juices and at the same time showcase their understanding of literary works (that perhaps they might refuse to read on any given day) that are given them to read. The digital cameras that donors will provide my class will empower my students to channel their energies into something that is creative and meaningful. When students find purpose in what they are doing and find that they are accomplishing and contributing something worthwhile, they step up to the plate and present themselves as inquisitive minds. If we, as teachers, can infuse the students with a healthy curiosity for learning then we truly are educators.
