I am the teacher librarian (Library Media Specialist) in a K-3 high-needs public school. Our current enrollment is 400 children with 80% free lunch; 18% English language learners; 13% children with special needs.

Digital storytelling has become an integral part of our literacy curriculum. The students are eager to write, illustrate, and narrate their fiction and non-fiction writing. They've practiced story boarding their ideas. However, we are missing one piece of hardware which would take us to the next level in using technology to enhance digital storytelling!

Our request will introduce students to a tool used by graphic designers -- a digital pen tablet! The digital tablet we are requesting is the appropriate size for all students grades K-3. Students will use the tablet to create original digital illustrations and to enhance their scanned artwork. Grade level teams have identified integrated curriculum projects in science, social studies, and art which will allow students to share their learning through illustration and writing.

If you would like to support a project which keeps on giving for many years to come, then please consider our pen tablet request. Every student in our school -- regular education, special education, and English as a Second Language (ESL) -- will have an opportunity to use the pen tablet as part of the multimedia workstation we are building and planning to have up and running in the fall of 2008.
