Can you hear me now? Well, if we were just having a friendly little chat on the phone, or somewhere in our small rural Illinois community, you probably could. However, if the conversation happened to be taking place in my elementary computer lab during any one of my 32 classes, with students ranging from grades one through eight, your response would undoubtedly be, What did you say? The lab is equipped with thirty computers, which are in continual use throughout the day. Technology skills from basic keyboarding to Excel spreadsheets, in addition to class-related projects such as brochures, signs, posters, research papers, etc. that support classroom learning in all curricular areas are addressed in my computer classes.

Educational computer programs, including those purchased by the district as well as those available via the World Wide Web, take advantage of visual and verbal communications to teach & reach children of all ages and abilities. Each day I discover an increasing need for headphones in the lab. Unfortunately, "Can You Hear Me Now?" is a recurring question. Speakers are in competition with one another to determine which can talk and sing the loudest. Sometimes even my voice as I provide individual help to students cause others to turn them up even more, which compounds the problem. For example, while one child is attempting to listen to a vowel/consonant sound to respond to a prompt or question, the next student might be listening to a story/song, or perhaps trying to learn another language. Much to my dismay, there are times students must turn speakers completely off and choose activities that do not require sound. This situation is definitely not an ideal choice for promoting life long learning and maximizing all technology has to offer.

I am requesting 30 durable children’s headphones to alleviate the noise pollution problem we are experiencing/enduring in our computer lab. I’ve tried the smaller, less expensive versions, and they just don’t hold up. Your generous donation would give peace of mind and open the doors of learning for every student in grades one through eight for years to come. I am certain, with proper care; these units will last and be a welcome addition to our computer environment.

Your intervention in our noise pollution dilemma would initiate a welcome and needed change in the learning atmosphere of our computer lab. I can just picture the look of contentment/happiness on students’ faces as they are able to focus on their own learning, whether it involves self-selected or teacher directed computer activities, without the continual distraction of a neighbor’s speaker noise. Your generosity would truly have a positive impact on the learning experience of all students in my program and we all would be eternally grateful.
