Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

For the past two years, I have worked with an amazing group of students in a high poverty section of the New York City. I started with my students in third grade last year, continued with them to fourth, and am moving to the fifth grade with them next year. Although we had a rough start, I have grown as a teacher and the kids made amazing transformations both academically and socially. I am constantly amazed by their ability to meet my expectations and am always striving to raise the bar that they have to meet. Fifth grade is very social studies oriented. With limited resources, I am already planning for next year how I will provide quality social studies instruction.

My students came to me with no idea what city, state, continent, or country they live in, let alone where anyone else lives! We have worked very hard to learn all about where we live and our community. Now it's time to explore the world! Doing this is very difficult with no maps or globes to refer to.

I am requesting a map set and two globes. The maps will help the students better visualize the geography of the United States and the World. The maps will be used in both Social Studies and Mathematics (as we have been and will continue to study and draw map scales.)

Living in poverty can narrow one's view of the world. My students know very little outside of their own neighborhood. I am looking to expand their horizons and give them a wider knowledge of the world. Your donation will help me open up our amazing world to my students.
