My Students

We are in the process of creating a community partner connection with a local theater house. My students are going to have the opportunity to participate in the Young Playwrights' Festival. With support from the curriculum in school and workshops after school, our students will be writing plays.

This experience will develop their writing skills, creativity and give them exposure into performing arts at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center with experts in the field.

Within the context of the Festival, the students will work with a creative team composed of a director, dramaturg, designer, and actors.

My Project

As a math teacher, I want to integrate some technology and engineering into this program and the language arts teacher is excited at the merger. The video recording function on the iPads give us a way for students to record their plays. The snap circuit kits provide students the opportunity to learn about electronics and circuits. Students can design set lighting with strobe lights in spinning patterns and strobe integrated circuits, color changing LEDs, fiber optics and color organ controlled by MP3 player, voice or finger. The engineering design process will be at work as students create. Some of the actors and actresses in these plays will be robots! The iPads will be used to program a variety of Sphero robots. It's like puppetry of the 21st Century with a plethora of 21st Century Skills to go with it.

I'm excited about an intermingling of STEM and art.

We'll be bringing together groups of students that don't usually interact closely. The "academic nerds" that like to program and figure out how stuff works. The "drama geeks" who express themselves through language, writing, and performing. Together, they will come up with some amazing performances. I can't wait to see the finished product!
