Art, Science, and Social Studies Help Us Learn!

My students need a drying rack for all of their artwork and class projects, non-fiction leveled science readers that they can access on their own, art supplies such as air dry clay and acrylic paint, a microscope so they can explore the natural world around them, a butterfly kit so they can witness metamorphosis first hand, books to help them learn about character and manners, books about different careers and what people who work actually do, and non-fiction readers about famous people who have made contributions to our world.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Students in an urban school want to explore their world through art, science, and social studies. I teach First grade in a high-need school that is currently slated for closure after the 2008-2009 school year. We have little resources allocated to use and many of my students are lacking in the experiences that our curriculum expects them to have.

Since our school has been slated for closure and the current budget crisis, all of our funding has been frozen. I had planned on doing several activities with the students this year, but cannot get funded because of these freezes. Next year looks bleak because of the budget and because it is our last year open. My students are hungry for new experiences and to learn about the world around them but giving those opportunities often requires resources that are beyond my reach. How can I teach about butterflies and caterpillars if so many have rarely had a glimpse of how amazing those little creatures are? I love to teach science and they are eager to learn more, but I have no books that they can read independently. I am working to build character and teach students about manners but I have no books to use as an example. Our social studies curriculum is above their reading level so it is hard for them to be engaged.

Through the following resources, my students will be able to experience many activities that are otherwise closed to them. They will be able to watch as a butterfly goes through each stage of metamorphosis. They will learn about important people who have contributed to the world we live in. They will get to explore the different plants and animals on a much more physical and real level that goes beyond what is offered in their textbooks. They will learn about compassion and how to treat others with respect. They will continue to ask questions and think about the world in new ways with each experience that is able to deepen their understanding.

These students are already living in a world that offers little to stimulate their curiosity. They do not have access to many of the experiences or materials of the typical middle class family. They need to be able to express themselves, to explore topics that interest them, and to learn about people and ideas that are beyond their community. You will make it possible for my students to become curious, life long learners who desire to explore their world and learn more about everything around them. Your help will ensure we have strong, resourceful, and inspiring leaders in the future.
