Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My highly tactile 5th graders may not be the strongest readers and writers, but boy are they smart! I'm a special education teacher in an integrated classroom. The one place my Learning Disabled students can shine is when they get their hands on their learning - literally!

My students come from varied backgrounds, but none of them are above the poverty level. The administration really needs to focus our financial resources on developing the reading and writing skills of all of the children in the school. But, as a result, there's no money left for Science. My kids just don't click with a textbook. They can probably take apart (and put back together) your CD player, but they struggle with reading the instructions on how to turn it on.

I can't think of a more worthy group of kids to look to our future and the future of our planet. They are smart, caring and just as concerned about the environment as any of us - they just don't "test" well. We've got to help them get the information they need for the topics they are interested in, and the best way is hands-on. The science kit that I know would achieve this contains test tubes, pH strips, "pollutants", experiments for cleaning water and kid friendly do-it-yourself instructions.

Mr. Gore keeps telling us about the difficulties we will face if we don't pay attention to our planet. Most of us seem daunted by this kind of a responsibility. Your donation can keep the fire of passion for this topic burning in the hearts and minds of 10-12 year olds who refuse to be intimidated by it. Who knows what kind of a difference you will make for our children and our children's children?
