Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I love teaching Science! My students enjoy discovering the world around them through the lens of the scientific method. When they see my lab coat come out they shout, "Yes! We are doing a lab today!". I encourage my students to work together and explain their learning process to each other.
The majority of our students, 80%, participate in the free or reduced-price lunch program.
More than 60% of our student population consists of English Language Learners (English is their second language). The average reading level for our student population is around 4th grade. Many of my students also have I.E.P.'s and require instructional guides and supports.
All of the students in my classroom are excited to learn about science. They love "acting like a scientist" and participating in labs wearing their lab coats and goggles. It is thrilling to see how labs can spark my students' creativity. It is exciting to watch students explore inquiry based lessons, in which the student carries the instructional role.
My Project
Students at my school come to school in the winter in a t-shirt and shorts. Many of them can’t afford winter clothes. Some students come to school lugging a blanket around their shoulders to keep warm. If it rains, they do not have a coat to keep them dry. Which is a problem since most of the buildings do not have covered hallways.
Students at my school face a myriad of issues: from homelessness, foster care, poverty, fractured homes, to an ill guardian. These students need support.
I hope that once all my students have the life essentials they need they will be able to focus on their classwork. I have noticed, in the past, when students receive a new winter coat their self-esteem rises and they are better able to meet challenges that come their way. I am also hoping a new coat will help keep students warm, dry, and healthy. Students that miss school end up falling behind and struggle with passing their classes.
By helping to purchase new winter coats and sweaters for students at my school, you will be ensuring that all my students have the life essentials to be successful.
It is difficult to study when you are cold and wet. All of my students will be able to focus on becoming better students and community members.
