Springtime is digging, planting, sprouting and growing in kindergarten. In the science center, we wear lab coats to extricate tulips from their flower pots. Then we gleefully replant them hoping that they grow. As a teacher in a Washington DC charter school with limited resources I thoroughly enjoy watching the students "own" the learning experiences. Planting and growing is to kindergarten as water is to rain.

Since we are currently learning the life cycle and parts of a plant, we will plant flowers, watch them grow, journal our observations and then give the flowers to Mom for Mother's Day. The biggest challenge a teacher faces is having disposable income to fund many different activities for a class of 25 students.
