ESOL Student Explorers Want to Get to Cyberspace

Our ESL class is made up of students from all over the world who are learning English as their second language. We have students from Europe, South America and Asia. As the world gets smaller, thanks to computers, we have many more ways to connect with each other. Our students want to be active members of the Internet community.

At present, we have one computer shared by 17 students. Each student has only one or two opportunities per week to use the class computer. Until their families can purchase a computer for their homes, the school is their primary access to the Internet. Without this access, they remain isolated at home with little exposure to English. The hope is to eventually have a lab of several computers for our class to use. As soon as soon as their families purchase a computer, our students will be ready to use it for more than just video games.

We would like a new computer to learn how to create and maintain a class website and blogs. All of the ESL students and their parents will be able to find the resources and support that they need to succeed in their new country. Students will be able to share ideas for projects and homework. Parents can access information about their children's ESL classes. We want to make our language more accessible to immigrant families through links to resources, which can help them to learn English.

Your generous donation will provide our ESL students with the necessary tools to communicate in English…helping themselves, each other and eventually the community in which we all live.
