From Beat Boxes to Beethoven

My students need 6 midi keyborads to create original musical compositions on their laptops.

"My lyrics are complicated like a Master's Thesis... I compose verses that rip Beethoven's Fifth into five pieces..." Hip Hop music runs deep in the veins of the students of my seventh grade art classes. They bang beats on their lunchroom tables or use their mouths to "beatbox", while others recite lyrics they have either written in their notebooks or make up off the top of their heads.

For many of them, the music provides an escape from the harsh realities of the tough communities in which they live. It is sometimes their only form of expression, creativity, and in some instances, communication. I have read lyrics by students who score poorly on English tests that express advanced vocabulary and use creative rhyme patterns (like the quote above, written by a student who struggles in English class). As their art teacher, as well as a practicing musician, I would love to tap into the creative potential these students exhibit by showing them how to use technological resources available at the school to write and record full compositions using music and voice.

I would like to create a music program at my school, beginning with simple compositions using laptop computers, Midi Keyboards and Microphones. We currently have a small Mac laptop cart with 15 computers, as well as four microphones. We need the Midi Keyboards so they can be connected to the laptops and used to create the musical compositions. The program will not only expose students to the process of creating a multi-layered piece of music, but serve as jumping point for learning more about music history and possibly inspire some students to learn instruments or other types of music production.

Your help will ensure that my students have a positive outlet for the daily struggles they express in their music. You will provide a resource that can change the course of child's future and perhaps spark the next musical renaissance.
