The "Why Try" program is a class designed for at-risk students who may be unmotivated or come from troubled backgrounds. Throughout the week we work on lessons about self-confidence, making good choices, and motivation. Once a week we do school wide recycling and attend study hall to help grades.
The students need to learn to set and achieve goals, confront challenges, resist peer pressure, and explore different fields of community and school service.
They are typical at-risk kids who need a close connection with adults and the extra push for motivation. The Why-Try program is set up as two separate classes of 15-20 boys and girls. Our goal is to to give students the right tools and support to succeed, in a small class environment.
My Project
We already have paired up with a local preschool head start program. We go to the elementary school every other Thursday, and we need help covering the costs for the school bus. We would use the donation to cover the cost of the bus two times a month for the rest of the year.
I am hoping that working with the preschoolers will help the students better understand their own competence, leading to more self-confidence and a can-do attitude that can spread to their work and academic pursuits.
As students work within their community, they learn that they can be responsible for making great things happen. This helps to build a sense of responsibility in students, and a sense of pride when they see what they've done is actually helping others.
