Who better to learn Spanish from than interns who come from the countries we study? Our Spanish Immersion students, family, and community would greatly benefit from working with Spanish interns.
Our students are native English-speaking children whose families have opted to place their students in a 100% Spanish Immersion program.
They are bright, eager learners who are expected to reach all the grade level Common Core standards they would have to meet in a regular English class. Our community supports building bi-literate, global citizens, and these students' Spanish proficiency and cultural awareness demonstrate the value of immersion programs.
My Project
Interns will work in both small group and whole class settings. Small group lessons will focus on Spanish language literacy and whole class lessons will teach students about their countries' cultural practices and history. Small group work will help all students achieve grade level proficiency. A culminating activity to the interns' visit will include a week of learning various aspects of Latin countries' histories and cultural practices, then demonstrating this learning to parents and community. Students will prepare traditional foods and teach their families about cultural art, games, music, and dance.
Words cannot describe the impact of having an intern work with our students!
They will not only learn Spanish and become biliterate, but learn to love countries they may one day visit. Ultimately, this cultural awareness leads students to think critically about global issues.
