My Students

At the beginning of each of my classes, I set aside time for my students to share anything they would like with the class. In this way, I am able to learn about their lives, hobbies, likes and dislikes. I am able to get student input on what happens in the classroom and in the school as a whole.

I teach active, excited, and passionate ten to eleven year old students.

Every day, I see their energetic, upbeat faces quickly shift to despair when asked to remain seated for ninety minute block periods. My school is a brand new facility with desks that do not allow for space in the classroom to safely move around or for easy access to collaborative grouping. With the steadily increasing number of students diagnosed with sensory processing disorders, like ADHD, I fear that more and more students will find the classroom to be an inhospitable environment that not only hinders their ability to concentrate, but makes them feel at odds with the ways in which we "do school".

My Project

If given the opportunity to add the yoga ball chairs to my classroom, all of the desks will be removed. In their place, there will be tables. Not only would the tables be a significant improvement for collaboration, but with the yoga ball chairs on wheels, the students would be given mobility and would be able to practice true teamwork--the kind of collaboration that is seen in the work force where people are able to work with differing groups depending on the task at hand. Furthermore, there is substantial research that supports the use of yoga balls in the classroom to improve concentration among students, especially those diagnosed with ADHD. According to Diana Henry, an occupational therapist, "There is a neurological pathway that goes from your body's balance and movement system to your alert system in your brain. Movement actually allows for alertness and attention."

If one of the biggest issues we are seeing in the classroom is caused by attention deficits, it is up to us to provide students with techniques and an environment that assists them in succeeding.

If my project is funded, the yoga ball chairs will help my students to be better focused and productive in the classroom environment.
