"Get in line. Stop touching him. Stop play fighting" is usually how my day starts. Teaching a group of boys who have behavioral concerns sums up my morning and afternoon. Nevertheless, they are receptive and ready to be taught. I want to bring the world they don't know exists into their view.
I primarily teach boys who attend the alternative school because they have behavioral patterns that hinder them from functioning in a "regular" school setting.
Most of them have been to some type of youth detention center and have to fend for themselves once they leave my care. All in all, they are smart and easy to get along with once you earn their respect, and love working with their hands. The more hands-on activities I can give them, the more they are engaged and willing to learn whatever I put before them.
My students will be introduced to robotics with the use of Lego Mindstorms EV3 kits in hopes of them becoming more interested in science, technology (that extends beyond social media), engineering and math. They typically don't like the subjects mentioned, but I desire to change the bad taste they have in their mouths concerning the areas into one they love and savor. The students will learn how the core areas of studies- math, science and reading/English Language Arts- all go together in hopes of them applying the knowledge they learn in my one class to all of their academic classes while at the alternative school and once they return to their home schools.
My students are often the ones who no one cares about or invests in.
I want them to understand that they are worth the investment, energy and the time. In terms of short-term benefits, I am hoping to do a better job of engaging my students with content that they are not as familiar with. Speaking long-term, I hope to use the materials as a means to motivate them to behave better once they leave my care. I hope the robotics lessons give them a reason to stay focused and further their educations.
