This school term I will be the reading specialist at my local alternative school. My students' grades will range from grades 6-12, most of whom are at least two grade levels behind when it comes to reading. In order for the students to make progress, they must 1) feel respected, 2) feel as if all is not lost, and 3) the desire to come to class and be productive. The task before them is a grave one, and a learning environment that takes their needs into consideration is of dire importance. Because of the students' advanced ages and behavioral concerns, it is noted that these students are sometimes not motivated to get their assignments done 1) because to them they seem elementary at best (imagine a sixteen year old being given a list of words such as house or cat to read over and over again) and 2) their knowledge of other things (how to handle themselves in their poverty-stricken neighborhoods, job experience, etc.) seem to override what they don't know/ struggle to comprehend.
