Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I currently teach Physical Education grades K-6. Our school is located in a city rich with poverty and violence, in which my students are exposed to on a daily basis. Their experiences do not include playing baseball at the park or swimming at a pool, nor have they ever been to a professional athletic event. The children have no idea how to be physically active within their environment. The word play to them does not mean going outside and coming up with a new and innovative game. My children have to worry about gang violence and drug abuse on the city streets. I want the children to be able to play, be physically active, as well as to teach them how to cooperate with one another. I also want to give them healthy alternatives to meet their current lifestyle needs. My proposal is for a Nintendo Wii play system, which will involve interactive play within my classes. The Nintendo Wii is a new piece of technology which will introduce and expose my children to a different way to stay healthy while staying indoors. I have also requested an additional remote control and video game in order for the Nintendo Wii to operate. The Nintendo Wii will be displayed through a LCD projector on the wall during class time. Different exercise stations will be set up in the gym and the students will have a chance to rotate around the gymnasium to all of the different exercise stations, which will include the Nintendo Wii station. The Nintendo Wii will also be used throughout the school year for our obese children during our adaptive class. My hope is that it will motivate and help them to understanding that exercise can be fun. It will be introduced to all of my classes and all of the students will have to opportunity to engage in this activity. If I am able to expose my students to healthy alternatives, it will not only improve their physical fitness levels but also provide them with current technology exposure towards physical fitness in which they have not had the opportunity to engage in. As a result, the students will build their self-esteem as well as provide them with a safe alternative towards improving their physical fitness. This proposal is a request to fund the cost of new technology that will enhance the physical fitness levels of my students through healthy play.
