Answers from everyone? Yes, it is harder than it sounds. In my class of 32 students we have loud ones and soft ones, eager and not so eager. In spite of the 6 hours a day I spend with my students there are some of them that, even after months, I hardly know. Why? Because they rarely raise their hand! I teach 5th grade in an urban school where most of the students come from poverty. Many do not have the confidence to participate in class because they are shy about their family, their life, their abilities. Add to that the fact that I have 32 in my room--it's no wonder I rarely hear from some. Yes, I do call on them, but it is profoundly difficult to give all students multiple chances each day to speak out and take a risk (that's what I call it--I want them to take risks--good risks like getting an answer wrong and learning the correct answer better than getting it right the first time). I have used the few whiteboards I have for years when I work with small groups, and they are awesome! Every child writes something, they are easy to erase and change (once the child sees the other answers). The point is not to get the answer right the first time, the point is to understand what the correct answer is. For some students that means writing on the board instantly; or others that means waiting and looking at what other students have done. But that is okay! this isn't a standardized test! It is practice. And giving each of my students two whiteboards and markers so that they can write their answer and respond to me all together is a wonderful way for them to practice, to develop confidence, and to actively participate in class. Of course, it doesn't hurt that it is cool to use a whiteboard. Everyone loves helping me erase the board on the wall at the end of the day. Now, with your generous gift, they can have that same satisfaction all the time, every day! So this is your chance to help my students speak up for themselves (in a silent way). This is your chance to give voice to ALL of my 32 students. This is your chance to give my 5th graders what they want so dearly--the opportunity to say what they think! Thank you.
