Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are English Language Learners and recent immigrants from various countries. Together, we learn physics through inquiry, while learning English language in context.

As English Language Learners, my students have gained immensely from supportive instructional materials such as graphic organizers and scaffolded science notebooks. However, it is difficult for students learning English to understand instructions and feedback given orally.

In this project, we will integrate physical supports such as graphic organizers and structured notebook pages with state-of-the art digital technology. Students will read and respond to prompts on worksheets, discuss with their peers, and then share with the class via the use of a writing tablet and a digital projector. In this way, students will get visual feedback for classroom instructions and sequence, and model responses can be shared with the class. This enables student-centered learning, where learners develop language in context and receive the intelligible input they require to grow in this instructional environment.

With just a little help, we can integrate several existing resources to make this project a reality. Our classroom has a projector and we recently received a computer. We now simply need an adapter to connect the two, and an input device that students can use to share their work. These resources will be integrated with paper-based notebook guides for all students.
